Interview with Queen Zee and the Sasstones

Queen Zee and the SasstonesはZapata JonesことQueen Zee率いるパンクバンド。Zeeはトランスジェンダーのボーカルとして奇抜なカラーの髪と同じカラーのブラが特徴的。

私自身お恥ずかしながらあまり問題については詳しくなくて、大したことも聞けなかったのがちょっと申し訳ないのだが、Zeeはそんな私の質問にも今どういったことに怒りを覚えていて、音楽を通して反抗しているのかを説明してくれた。


音楽もこの人はゲイだからという観点で聴いたこともなかったのだが、最近Fuzeという音楽メディアを時々チェックしていて、「進化する海外のLGBT音楽 ここでも取り残される日本」という記事を読んで、彼らの揺れ動く葛藤や苦しみといった感情が最近になってようやくそれそのものとして届けられ、受け入れられ始めてきたということを知った。

ゲイを公言しているミュージシャンで私が思いつくアーティストといえば、Years and YearsのOllyやBaths、Perfume Geniusだが、Ollyは最近はBBCでゲイに育つこと、というドキュメンタリーに出ていたのが私は記憶に新しい。

日本だとLGBTQに関する話題はなんとなくタブーなような気がする。みんな語りたがらない。

話はちょっとずれるけど、最近UKの音楽シーンがまたパンクロックを中心に盛り上がってきている気がする。このバンドもそうだけど、いま起きている政治や社会問題に対して若者が反骨精神を見せているのかも。Brexitにせよ、トランプ大統領にせよ。

1. バンドメンバーとはどのようにして出会ったのですか？一緒に演奏するようになったきっかけはなんでしょう？

Zee: 私とEm(ギター)が出会ったのは、リバプールのクロウハーストのライブ。そのあとでEmが私がネットで音楽をリリースしているのを見つけて、その週末にライブしなよって後押ししてきたから、一緒にやったの。そこから雪だるま式に始まった感じ。

2. メンバーの性格について教えてもらえますか。

Zee: 私たちは皆それぞれ個性があるんだよ、EmとCourtneyは意気投合してて、お互い飲み友。Lilyは落ち着いてて、Frankieはおどけ役ってとこ。

3. Queen Zeeを名乗り始めたのはいつ頃ですか？

Zee: 2015年のクリスマス頃かな、一番最初のデモを2016年の2月にリリースしたから。

4. ピンクポップパンクと言われているようですが、これはどこから来ているのでしょう？

自分たちでそういう呼び方をした記憶はないから多分どこかのブロガーがそういう風に呼んでたんだと思う。

5. pop音楽も好きだとのことですが、どういうpop音楽が好きなのですか？お気に入りのレコードは？

Zee: pop音楽は大好き。いまはGrimesがお気に入りなんだけど、最近はCherry Hex and The Dream Chrurchっていうノッティンガムのバンドにハマってる。今までで一番好きなのはABBAだけど、好きな作品と言われたらBjorkのHomogenic。

6. Clashのインタビューでは、クィアカルチャーに言及して”クィアシーンは部分的にただのレインボー資本主義になっちゃったみたい、本当に活動的な影響力っていうよりはね”と話していますね。日本はまだこうしたカルチャーに対してはかなり遅れていて、ロンドンで起きているようなこととは全く正反対です。ロンドンではまだ状況もかなり良くなって来てるように思うのですが、ロンドンでの動きについて少し説明してもらえますか？

Zee: 私はリバプール出身で、リバプールはロンドンのクィアカルチャーとはちょっと違うかな。ロンドンではもっともっと大きなことが起きてる。でも全体として私が言いたかったのは、クィアカルチャーは活動的な影響力になっていて、本質的にね、私たちも怒る理由はいくつもある。例えばアメリカ大統領はうるさいくてオープンにトランスフォビア(トランスジェンダーに嫌悪的な態度を取るひとたち)謳ってるし、イギリス政府といえばこれまたオープンにホモフォビックな民主統一党に支持されてるし、去年殺害されたトランスジェンダーの人数は今までで一番多かったこととか。大企業がレインボーカラーを自社製品に載っけてみたりするのなんかよりもそこには誇りがある、この誇りは守ることと、LGBTQとコミュニティを世界中で讃えることにあるんだよ！

7. これまでのライブで一番良かったことはなんでしょう？


Zee: 人間ピラミッド。そのために生きてる感じ。

8. ”Sissy Frsts”と”Sass or Die”について教えてください。それぞれどんなテーマの曲なんでしょうか。制作過程についても教えてください。

Zee: Sass or Dieは自分が好きなものを見つけること、それからその情熱に飲み込まれることについて歌ってるんだよ！Sissy Fistsは今までで抑圧されてきた人たちを呼び集めることについてだね！この曲は2曲ともリバプールのエレベーターっていうスタジオで1日でレコーディングしたんだ。どっちもライブ演奏でやったんだ、クリックもなし、ただただエネルギーだね！

9. あなた方にとって”sissy生意気でいること”とはどういうことを意味しますか？

Zee: 生意気でいるっていうのはみんなが思うより大事だと思うんだよね。男らしさとか女らしさっていうのは有害になりえるよ、私たちが考える、性によって人はこうあるべきとかこうあるべきではないとかっていう考えはさ。生意気であることは自分自身であることなんだ、そして人が自分たちにあって欲しいという像に抵抗すること。

10. 日本のファンにメッセージをお願いします。

Zee: 平和、愛、それから生意気であれ。自分の情熱を見つけて、それに飲み込みまれよ。そして自分自身であれ、自分を愛せよ。

Zeeにはfbでメッセージを送ったところ、UK時間だったのもあるけど、即メッセージが返ってくる超レスの早いひとでした。びっくり。

I hereby introduce the new band from Liverpool called "Queen Zee and the Sasstones."



They have contracted with the music label called Nice Swan Records which I'm interested in the most recently.



Queen Zee and the Sasstones is garage punk rock band which is led by transgender vocal queen Zee.



I have to confess that I don't know a lot about the situation regarding LGBTQ. 



The only musicians I can think of right now as transgender is Baths, Arca, Perfume Genius, Olly Alexander from Years and Years...



I've watched a BBC documentary about Olly recently to know more about LGBTQ.

I also read the article "Evolving LGBTQ music in foreign countries while Japan is left behind."  It seems LGBTQ is touchy topic in JPN. People don't talk about it usually.

Zee told in the interview about the attitude towards the politics and the society. I think this attitude is one of the main gear for new bands in the UK.

1. How did you meet the member of the band members? and how did you start playing together?

- Myself and Em (guitars) meet at a Crowhurst show in Liverpool. After that he saw me releasing music online and pushed to play a show that weekend, which we did. From there it's just snowballed.

2. Please describe the each band member's personality.

- We all have very different personalities, Em and Courtney are kindred spirits and drinking buddies. Lily is the calm one and Frankie is the joker.

3. When did you start using the name "Queen Zee"?

- It was around Christmas 2015, I released the first demo in February 2016.

4. Why is your music called ”pink pop punk”?

- I don't think we've ever called it that ourselves, it's something a blogger has attributed to us! 

5. You also like pop music, what kind of pop music have you been listening? Which record is your favourite? 

- I love pop music. At the moment Grimes is my go to, but I recently got onto Cherry Hex and The Dream Church who are from Nottingham, UK who are amazing. My favourite ever pop artist is Abba but my favourite record is Homogenic by Bjork 

6. In Clash's interview, you mentioned the queer culture and said you think ”parts of the queer scene have kind of just become rainbow capitalism, rather than a genuine aggressive force.” Japan still gets behind of accepting those culture and their right, but the situation seems completely different in London. For me, the situation looks getting better. Could you explain more about those recent move in LDN? (such as rainbow coloured underground escalator.)

- I'm from Liverpool, and Liverpool and Londons Queer culture is slightly different. London is a much bigger city with more going on. However as a whole what I meant about Queer culture as an aggressive force, is essentially, we do have plenty of reasons to be angry. Whether that is the President of the United States' blantant and open transphobia, the UK government being propped up by the DUP who are openly homophobic, or the fact more Trans people where murdered in the States last year than any year previous. There is more the pride than big companies putting a rainbow on their product, pride needs to about protecting and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community world wide!

7. Please tell me about the most incredible thing happened in your live show.

- Human Pyramid. That's what we live for.

8. What is theme of ”Sissy Fists” and ”Sass or Die”?How were they made? 

- Sass or Die is about finding something you love and just letting your passion consume you! Sissy Fists is a rallying call for everyone who's ever been oppressed! We recorded them both in a day at a studio in Liverpool called Elevator. Both live, no click track, just energy!

9. What does ”being sissy” mean to you?Resisting to the politics or modern culture?

- Being sissy is more important than people think. Masculinity and femininity can be so toxic, our perceived ideas of what people should or should not be based on their gender. Being sissy is being you, it's resisting what people want you to be. 

10. Could you give me the message to your Japanese fans? yo



 - Peace, love and sass. Find your passion, and let it consume you. Be yorself, love yourself.
