だが、そんなUKロック再燃の中で忘れてはいけないのは、Bristolのバンドたちだ。とはいえ、Bristolと聞いて私がすぐ思いつくのはどちらかというとロックではなくて、ダブステップシーンが結構盛り上がっていたことぐらいだったのだが。それが今はIdlesやLiceといった超注目若手バンドのシーンにもなりつつある。ここまで書いておいて彼らはBristol出身ではないものの、大学を機にBiistolで活動を始めたHazeも今はBristolの注目バンドの一つである。去年はGreenman Festivalで若手注目バンドとして出演し、あのFat Whiteやwhenyoung、なども所属するHate Hate Hate Recordsと契約した彼らはこれからの活躍が大いに期待できる。
以下、まだシングルをいくつかリリースしたばかりのそんな彼らにインタビューした。

1. バンド自体はバッキンガムシャーで結成したそうですが、そのあとブリストルに引っ越していますね。なぜブリストルだったのでしょうか？そこでの音楽シーンが活気があるからでしょうか。引っ越してからの生活や、そこでの他のバンドとの交流について教えてください。
Ollie: ブリストルに移ったのはボーカルのWillとギターのConnorが数年前にブリストルの大学に行くために移ったからで、その後そこで活動し始めたからだよ。ここでの音楽シーンは最高だし、それが本当に好きになったんだ。ブリストルの音楽シーンにいるバンドたちもみんなフレンドリーだし、LiceとかNorman the Conquereとかには良くしてもらってる。
2. Hazeというバンド名はどこから来てるのですか？
Dan: Willと僕が10歳の時に結成したバンドは"Plan B"って名前だったんだけど、すぐ他の人に取られちゃったんだよね…だから次つけるときはユニークで覚えやすい名前が良いなと思ってさ…それで僕らの創造性を寄せ集めて、2分後ぐらいにHazeって名前になったというわけ。
3. Hate Hate Hate Recordsとはどのような経緯で契約を結ぶことになったのですか？
Will: "Ladz Ladz Ladz"のシングルをリリースした日に、Lion Coffee + Recordsのインストアで演奏したんだけど、そこで会ったんだ。彼らは僕らの曲をすごく気に入って、僕らも彼らとすごく馬があったっていうのが経緯。"St John / Piochitas' 7"を Hate Hate Hateからリリースできてすごく誇らしいよ。
4. 音楽以外で好きなアートはありますか？もしあればそのアートで好きなものを教えてください。
Ollie: 個人的には20年代のシュールレアリズムが好きだな。サルヴァドールダリとかアンドレブレトンとかは常に僕の興味をくすぐるね。
5. シングルのPiochita'sについて詳しく教えてもらえますか。この曲は何について歌っているのでしょうか。
Will: えーとPiochitasっていうのは雑に訳せば小さいヤギって意味なんだけど、トゥルツキーとフリーダカーロが関係を持ってたときにフリーダがトゥルツキーにつけたあだ名なんだよ、もちろんそのヒゲをもじってね。曲中ではトゥルツキー殺人を哀悼して、この関係性がトゥルツキーの兄弟愛に対する裏切りなのかについて疑問視してるんだ。まあ正直言ってこの曲はバカなことについて歌ってるだけだから、そんなにシリアスに受け止めてないでおいてよ。

7. バンドメンバー達はどのようにして結成まで至ったのでしょう？
Connor: WillとDan、僕とOllieはそれぞれ小学校で別々に知り合ったんだけど、13の時に中学で4人が顔を合わせたんだ。バンド結成のきっかけはみんなガンズアンドローゼスとスクールオブロックが好きだったからさ。
8. Youtuberのチャンネルを見たところ数年前から活動されているようですね。また当時の音楽性(2,3年前に投稿されている音楽はどちらかというとParquet Courtsみたいなポップ寄り)は今とはだいぶ違うようです。音楽性についてはこの数年でどのように変わってきたのでしょうか。
Will: まあ僕らは13の時からバンドをやってるし、その時影響を受けたものとか音楽とかもかなり変わったよ。最初バンドを始めた時は古典的なロック音楽にArctic Monkeysのセンスを良い意味でぶっこんだみたいな音楽を演奏してたんだ。田舎の村祭りで演奏してびっくりさせたりね。多分自分たちの曲を書き始めて、色々な見方を合わせたHazeサウンドを作り始めたのはTelevisionを知ってからだと思う。
9. 去年のグリーンマンフェスティバルはどうでしたか？
Dan: グリーンマンフェスティバルのことはマジで僕らにとって2018のハイライトだったと思う。今まで演奏したスケールで一番大きかったし、今まで行った中でも最高のフェスだったしね。
10. 今年の目標を教えてください。
Ollie: 僕らの音楽をもっとたくさんシェアしたいと思ってるし、色々ライブをやったりフェスに出たいな！
Those who are into bands in the UK might check the bands in London first. That's right, there are now Shame, Sorry, Fat White Family, Goat Girl and those young great rock bands in South London. Me, living in Tokyo, is envying people who live there and watching their live show almost everyday.
However, you mustn't forget the bands in Bristol. You maybe think of Dubstep music scene first, such as Pinch and Massive Attack. Please don't forget to check rock bands there though. They have bands like Idles and Lice, now it's time to check Haze. Although they are not originally from Bristol, they started their band career in there after the members move there for their university. Last year, they played at Greenman Festival as a young rising band. Now they contracted with Hate Hate Hate Records (the record label famous for having Fat White Family, whenyoung, The Wytches and so on). There's no choice not checking them!

1. You formed the band in Buckinghamshire and moved to Bristol. Why Bristol? Is it because the music scene there is more lively? How do you feel after moving there? Are bands there friendly to you?
Ollie: Will (vocals) and Conor (guitar) moved to Bristol for university a couple of years ago which is why we started playing there. The music scene there is really great and is something that we have fallen in love with. The bands there most certainly friendly! We've made life long friends in bands such as Lice and Norman the Conquerer.
2. Where does the band name come from?
Dan: Will and I started a band called 'Plan B' when we were 10 years old. That name soon became taken by someone… So we decided to change the band name to something totally unique and memorable… we really pushed our collective creativity and settled on Haze after 2 minutes.
3. How did you sign up with Hate Hate Hate records?
Will: We meet the Hate Hate Hate team when playing an in-store show at Lion Coffee + Records on the day we released our debut single ‘Ladz Ladz Ladz’. They were genuinely really excited by our music and we got on really well with them; we're incredibly proud of the ’St John / Piochitas' 7" we've released on Hate Hate Hate.
4. Except music, what kind of art do you like? If you have favorite in that art, please tell me.
Ollie: I'm personally a big fan of the surrealist art movement in the 1920s. Artists such as Salvidor Dali and Andre Breton have always tickled my fancy.
5. Could you tell me more about your single ‘Piochitas'? What is the song about?
Will: Well ‘Piochitas' roughly translates to ‘little goat’, which was a nickname apparently given to Trotsky by Frida Kahlo during their affair, referring to his beard. The song laments Trotsky’s murder, yet also questions whether the affair shows a betrayal of Trotsky’s supposed fraternal values. To be honest the song is a bit daft - don’t take it too seriously.

7. How did you meet each other and start the band?
Conor: Will and Dan, me and Ollie separately met at seperate primary schools and the the four of us met aged 13 at Secondary School. We made a band because we collectively obsessed over Guns N Roses and School Of Rock.
8. Judging from your Youtube channel, you formed the bands a few years ago? And music at that time sounds quite different from now. How have your music changed in these terms?
Will: Well we’ve been playing as a band since we were about 13 so our influences and the music we enjoy making has changed a lot over time. I mean when we started out we mainly played Classic Rock with some Arctic Monkeys thrown in for good measure. We wowed many a countryside village fete. I think it was only when we discovered Television that we started to write our own music and incorporate aspects that would become the Haze sound.
9. How was Green Man Festival last year?
Dan: Green Man Festival was a real highlight of 2018 for us. Not only was it one of the best gigs we've ever played but it was also one of the best festivals we've attended in general. We met friends Squid for the first time and had a darn good hoot-a-nanny!
10. Please tell me your aim in 2019.
Ollie: We're really looking forward to sharing more of our music and continuing to play lots of shows and festivals!
