というか最近音楽そのものを全然聞く気持ち的余裕がなかったんだけども、
最初バンドが再編したと聞いたとき、 特にそういった詳しいお知らせもなかったので、勝手に私は解散して一部メンバーで再編したのだと思っていたのだけど、どうやらそうではなかったらしい。
遠く離れた日本に住んでいると、好きなバンドの活動情報もSNS経由でしか入ってこないので困ったものだ。
とにかく、再編して早速新曲をリリースした新Home Countiesにインタビューすることが出来たので掲載する。
HazeはHate Hate Hate Recordsから出していたシングルがダークでシニカルでとがったパンクで好きだったのだけど、 Home Countiesになってメンバー編成がちょっと変わってパーカッションが加わったのもあり、アップビートな感じのパンクロックになっていた。
シングルリリース時期がコロナのロックダウンとほぼ重なってしまったのがとても残念なので、せめてこのインタビュー記事がバンドの知名度アップにつながればなと思う。

1. 今回はHome Countiesとなってから初めてのインタビューになります。以前インタビューしたときはHazeという名前で活動していましたが、今回こうした新たな名前で活動を始めた背景を教えてもらえますか？
僕らはずっとHazeという名前で4ピースバンドを学生時代から組んでいたんだけど、「Haze」としての活動歴が何年にもなってきて、音楽的にも僕らの生活にもちょっと合わないような気がしてきたんだ。 それからちょっとメンバーのラインナップも変更して、長年の友達だったJerryとフロントマンのBarnabyをシンセ/パーカッションに迎えた。そんなこともあってちょっと違うバンドっぽく感じたからバンド名も変えたんだよ。
2. Home Countiesという名前はどこから取ってきたのですか(特にHome Countiesという名前自体はロンドンにある地域の名前のようですが)
「Home Counties」はちょっと冗談っぽく選んだ名前なんだよ、ミドルクラスの快適な一戸建てから取ったちょっとネガティブな意味を含む言葉だからね。 僕らの歌詞のほとんどは「ミドルイングランド」の日常生活の社会的批判を描いてて、Home Countiesっていうのはほとんどの場合このコンセプトとは切っても切れない関係だからね。 ちょっと考えてた他の名前は「Nu Labour(新しい労働者)」とか「Nue Labour(新しい労働者)」ってやつ、何かポストブレアブリテンのアイディアに基づいた名前にしたかったんだ。
3. バンドの拠点はまだBristolなのですか？今の世界的状況を考えると、ミュージシャンやアーティストはとても大変な状況にいると思います。ロンドンのバンド達なんかは結束して新しくイベントをやったりと お互い助け合っているようですね。最近のイベントなどでのバンド活動としてはどうですか？
僕とConor、Samはまだ今のところBristolにいるよ、Barnabyは僕らが育ったところに住んでるけど(バッキンガムシャーのハイ・ウィカムの辺り)、あとDanはロンドンで学生をやってる。
ロックダウンの前はバンドとしても良い時期だったんだよね、北部の方では友達のHotel Luxに同行させてもらったし。コロナの最初のリアルなインパクトは「Redevelopment」のシングルリリースのときにリリースライブをキャンセルする必要を感じた時だね。 それから数日してボリスがパブとかのクローズをアナウンスしたんだ。

4. デビューシングルの「Redevelopment」(再開発)は古い建物へのノスタルジックな感情や、再開発の状況、新しく建てられた建物がとてつもなく高額で売られていることについて歌われていますね。 これについては若い世代がそうした資産市場に入れないことやその一方で老人世代が変わろうとしないことへのジェネレーションギャップが反映されているのでしょうか。 これをデビューシングルに選んだ理由は何かありますか？この曲についてのストーリーや、もし解釈が合っていなければ教えてください。
「Redevelopment」は世代間ギャップ的な批判とかについてではなかったけど、どちらかというと何を保存して何を変えるのかみたいなことを歌った曲かな、あとは進化と保存のくりかえしについてかな。 これを聞いた人はそういう世代間ギャップへの批判だと理解した人もいると思うけど、僕的にはノスタルジック的な考えと建てられた環境をどうやって消費していくかみたいな考えについて歌ったというか。
これを最初のシングルにしたのは、この曲が比較的日常のことについて歌った曲で、Home Countiesとしてこれから僕らがどうやってアプローチしていくのかを紹介するのにすごく合ってると思ったからなんだ。 音楽的にもこれが合ってるなと思ったし、Hazeのときよりももっとアップビートで近寄りやすい感じになってると思う。

5. Youtubeでホームライブビデオを見ましたが、とても楽しめました。またやる機会はありますか？どちらにしても私の住んでいるところからバンドのパフォーマンスが見れないので、自分の好きなアーティストがこうしたライブをあげてくれるのはとても嬉しいです。
楽しんでくれて嬉しいよ、作る側としても楽しかったしね！僕的にはバンド達は何でもいいから出来る限りの方法でパフォーマンスすることが大事だと思うし、こういった変な世界にアーティストが適応していくのを見るのは楽しいよ。 僕たちは今のところまたこういったライブをやる計画をしてて、前回からどれだけうまいやり方で出来るのか考えてるところだから、引き続き注目よろしく！
6. デビューシングル以外にも「That's where the money's gone」の曲のライブ映像を見ましたが、すごくシニカルな曲ですね。この曲がどうやって作られたのか教えてもらえますか。
「That's where the money's Gone」は僕らの中でも一番短時間で出来た曲なんだ。ある日酔っぱらってバンド練習してるところにConorがリフを演奏し始めて、そこにみんなで参加したら変なことに上手くまとまったんだよね。 即興で僕が歌詞を思いついてそこからずっと変わってない。書き直そうかなとも思ったけど、この曲のシンプルなメッセージと自然な感じが気に入ったからさ。
7. ロックダウン中のプレイリストを作ってもらえますか？どんな曲がイングランドでの現状を表すのにちょうど良いと思いますか？
国のムードとしては不安と恐れがそれぞれ分断しているような感じ、あとは集団的な思いやりとか自分たちがどんな国に住みたいのかを再評価し始めたね。どちらかというと国のムードを反映した音楽っていうよりかは、僕らのロックダウンプレイリスト(Spoifyにあげてるよ)アップビートな曲ばっかりだね、気持ちを持ち上げるためにも。
8. ロックダウンが終わったら一番最初に何がしたいですか？
パブに行くこと。
Since the last interview, more then half a year has passed now.
I was super busy at work so I didn’t have enough time to listen to new music recently but I made time because one of my favorite band Haze (Here is the last interview with them.) started again as a new band.
When I heard about the news, I thought they disbanded and formed a new band but it wasn’t actually.
The sad thing is that I’m living in Tokyo far away from England so it’s kind of hard to get accurate information.
I liked Haze. When I found their music, they released their singles from Hate Hate Records and their music was dark, cynical and sharp punk which changed it to more upbeat punk when they changed their name to Home Counties.
Unfortunately, their new start as Home Counties was met with COVID 19 disaster. So I hope my interview post will help in their advertisement.
Anyway, I was able to interview with the band named Home Counties (aka. Haze), so here is their interview:
We had been playing as Haze, and as a four-piece, since we were at school. ‘Haze’ had increasingly over the years seem ill-fitting for where we were going musically and in life in general. We had a few line-up changes, bringing in our long-term friend and Jerry frontman Barnaby on synth/percussion. It grew to feel like a different band, which needed a different name.
2. Why did you pick the name Home Counties? (In particular, is the name related to the Home Counties the area around London)
‘Home Counties’ was chosen somewhat jokingly, for its negative connotations of detached middle-class comfortability. Much of our lyricism draws on social critiques of everyday life in ‘Middle England’, and the Home Counties is often inextricably linked to the concept. The other name we momentarily considered was ‘Nü Labour’, or ‘Neu Labor’, which I think shows how we wanted to have a name grounded in the idea of a post-Blair Britain.
3. Are you still based in Bristol? Thinking of the situation around the world, I think musicians and artists are facing a very difficult situation. I saw the indie band communities (especially in London) are helping each other to support by holding a new event or project. How are you doing as a band during the recent events? (leading up and during lockdown)
Me, Conor and Sam are still living in Bristol at the moment, whilst Barnaby is living where we grew up (around High Wycombe, Bucks) and Dan is studying in London.
Pre-lockdown had been a good time for the band, joining our friends Hotel Lux for some dates up north. The first real impact covid-19 had on us was that we felt it necessary to cancel our release show for our single, ‘Redevelopment’. A few days later, Boris announced the closure of pubs, etc.
4. Your debut single "Redevelopment" is about the nostalgic emotion to the old buildings, how things have been and the criticism of building new overpriced homes at the same time. Is this a reflection in the generation gap between younger people being unable to move into the property market and the older generation not wanting to face change? Do you have any reason why you chose this as your debut single? Please tell me if there is any story about writing this song, and if my understanding of the song is not right
‘Redevelopment’ wasn’t really intended as a sort of generational critique, but more just pointing out that are ideas of what we should preserve or get rid of change over time, and the same arguments for progress and conservation repeat themselves in cycles. I think some people have understood the song as a critique of gentrification, but for me it’s a discussion of ideas of nostalgia and how they play out upon the built environment.
It made sense as a first single because as a song discussing a topic which is relatively mundane and concerned with everyday life, it seemed a fitting introduction to how we wanted to approach things as Home Counties. It also felt right musically; more upbeat and approachable than a lot of the Haze stuff.
5. I watched your home live video via Youtube and I enjoyed it. Do you have any plans to do it again? Since we cannot see your performance anyway, I kind of appreciate my favorite musicians do those live shows on the Internet
We’re glad you enjoyed it - we had a lot of fun making it! I think it’s important for bands to perform in anyway possible and have enjoyed seeing the ways artists are adapting to this strange new world. We are currently planning another one at the moment and how we can develop it from last time, so stay tuned!
6. I also watched your other song's live video playing "That's where the money's gone" it sounds cynical, Could you tell me how this song was created?
‘That’s Where the Money’s Gone’ was our quickest song to come together ever. It all happened at one drunken band practise where Conor started playing the riff and we all sort of just joined in and it was strangely coherent. I came up with the lyrics on the spot and they’ve stayed the same since. I had considered a rewrite, but I liked the simplicity of the songs message and the spontaneity.
7. Could you make a playlist for the lockdown, what kind of music reflects the feeling in England currently?
The national mood at the moment seems split between anxiety and fear on the one hand, and collectivist compassion and a much needed reassessment of what sort of country we want to live in. Rather than music that reflects the feelings of the country, our lockdown playlist (on our Spotify) is full of upbeat tunes, providing some uplift.
8. What is the first thing you want to do after the lockdown?
Go to the pub.
