ノルウェーからやってきたヘンテコアフロポップバンドPom Poko。勘づいたひともいるかもしれないが、そう、彼らのバンド名はジブリの有名作品「平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ」にちなんでいる。

音楽学校に通っていたメンバーが、とある文学フェスで演奏を頼まれて、ちょっと実験的に始めたそうで、当初は特にバンドを組む予定もなかったそうだ。たまたま見ていた検索したジブリの映画作品名がおもしろかったので、それがそのままバンド名になったとのこと。
音楽は何より楽しむことが大事と語る彼らがつむぐのは、つい踊りだしたくなるような初期Vampire WeekendやDirty Projectors、Animal Collectiveを彷彿とさせるようなへんてこなアフロビート音楽だ。ノルウェーのフェスだけでなく、イギリスのフェスにも出演した彼らはつい最近Interview Magazineにも取り上げられていた。
今回はバンドメンバーのことや、人生を楽しむ秘訣について教えてもらった。

1. メンバーは皆どのようにして出会ったのですか。メンバーそれぞれの性格はどんな感じですか？
Pom Pom: 僕らはみんな同じ学校に通ってたんだけど、一緒だったときもあれば重ならないときもあって、最終的には勉強のためにトロンドヘイムに4人で引っ越した時に会ったんだ。みんな性格もばらばらだけど、共通してるのは、ちょっとおバカなユーモアセンスってところかな。Ragnhid(ボーカル)はおふざけが行き過ぎる前に止めるのが上手いんだよね。Jonas(ベース)は控えめな感じに僕らをいじって楽しんでるよ。Ola(ドラム)はいつも冗談を用意してるんだよね。Martin(ギター)は寝てるか異常なレベルの砂糖を接種してるかだな。
2. ジャズを学んでいたからか、いろんなレビューであなたの音楽のジャンルについてはジャズの影響が言及されているそうですね。どちらかというと私はAnimal CollectiveやVampire Weekend、Dirty Projectorsのようなアフロポップの要素があると思っていて、最初はアメリカのバンドかと思いました。ノルウェー内の音楽シーンでは自分たちの音楽はどのような立ち位置だと感じますか？
P: ノルウェーの音楽シーンでは、僕らの音楽はすごくよく受け止められてると思うよ、まだ同じようなことをしてるバンドはあまりいないけどね。多分僕らの音楽がアメリカとかイギリスのバンドの方が共通点多いっていうのはいえてるね。
3. すごく色々な要素が入った音楽だと思います。どうやって曲は制作しているのですか？メロディーを作るときにもめたりはしませんか?
P: 僕らはすごく本質的なやり方で一緒に音楽を作ってて、みんながみんな同じレベルでそれぞれのパートに対して向き合って、ランダムなアイディアを出し合ってるんだ。いつも誰かが考えたひとつのアイディアから始まって、そこから音楽を作っていくんだ。Ragnhildがだいたいやってるうちにメロディを思いついて、それから僕らがいくつかそれに対してアイディアを思いつくんだけど、メロディに対してはあんまり話し合ったりしないんだよ。まあ一番大事なのはつまらなくないってことだしね。
4. 今年出演したフェスはどうでしたか?
P: フェスはすごい良かったよ!ノルウェーでも、他の場所でも大きいフェスで演奏できたのはほんとにうれしいし、同時にちょっと怖くもあった。でもそれも後で吹っ飛んで最高だったけどね!
5. ノルウェーの音楽シーンについてはどう思いますか？
P: ノルウェーの音楽シーンはすごく良いよ!いろんなバンドやアーティストがいて、みんなが色々なことを実験してるし、大きくも小さくも自分が面白いなと思う人たちと簡単にコミュニケーションが取れる規模なんだ。
6. バンドとしてのキャリアは偶然始まったそうですね。今は他の国の音楽フェスでも演奏したり、色々な評価を受けていると思いますが、当初と今とではバンド活動への姿勢は変わりましたか？
P: 自分たちがバンドとしての野望があることに気付くにはちょっと時間がかかったんだよ、でも自分たちの音楽で居場所が出来るってわかってからは、もっと良いものを作り出すために努力しようと決めるのは簡単だったね。でも音楽を作ることに対する姿勢は変わってないよ、僕らは特に世界中でラジオを爆発させるような音楽を作るつもりもないけど、ただ楽しくて面白い音楽が作りたいと思ってる。
7. コラボしてみたいバンドかシンガーはいますか？
P: Oumou Sangaréかな、マリ出身の素晴らしいシンガーだよ。
8. 最近は何を聞いていますか？
P: Deerhoofの新しいアルバム、Omni, Big Thief, Kirk Franklin, Xenia Rubinos, PC Music Vol. 1とかだね。

10. デビューアルバムについて何か計画はありますか?アルバム制作では何か新しいことにトライする予定はありますか?
P: いままさに色々計画してるところだよ!次の夏までにはアルバムを出せたらいいなとは思ってるけどね、祈っててよ。アルバムの形に大革命を起こすようなものじゃないと思うけど、強烈で変わったタイプの同時にいろんなことが起こってる変わった音楽になると思うよ。
11. 音楽演奏に関しては、楽しむことと自分の心にしたがうことを大事にしているようですが、音楽以外では何をするのが好きですか？
P: 僕らが好きなのは: 料理、裁縫、山登り、メロディックなエレクトロ音楽を作る、超ヒップなコーヒーバー、ユーモアのセンスがいい人と遊ぶこと、猫と遊ぶ、キャンディを食べる、インディアンフード、日本のアニメ映画だね。
12. “You’ll be fine”のMVはかなりおもしろいですね。バナナをひたすら食べたり、それをもどしたり…このビデオのアイディアはどこから出てきたのですか？赤いリンゴと黄色いバナナの色のコントラストが、カラフルな音楽に合っていて面白いですね。
P: このビデオのアイディアはRagnhildの兄妹のOlavが出してくれて、政策もしてくれたんだ。僕らはたしか緑の画面とかのアイディアは合った気がするけど、バナナのアイディアを出したのはOlavだよ。
13. 楽しむというのがあなたの音楽のキーワードみたいですね、ボーカルのRagnhildもライブ中はカラフルな服を着ていてすごく楽しそうです。北欧の気候を考えると、楽しむのはすごく重要だろうと思いますが、落ち込んだ時はどうやって気分を上げてますか？
P: キャンディを食べることだね!それか変な古着を買うとか。あとはお互い人生について不満を言いまくったら、気分がよくなるね。
14. 日本のファンにメッセージをお願いします。
P: 君たちの国に本当に行ってみたいよ!日本にすぐにでも行きたいっていう大きな夢はあるんだ。もし僕らの音楽が気に入ってくれたらメッセージを送ってよ。
Happy afro-beat pop band came out from Norway. Named "Pom Poko", taken from the famous Japanese Ghibli anime movie, I soon had interest in their music.
Their band carrier started like a coincidence. They went to the same school to study Jazz music, and they were asked to play at the literature festival. It seems their music wasn't received very well at the fes but there were some people who were interested in their music. Probably I were one of them if I were there.
I've never been to Norway but I guess sometimes it's hard to enjoy the life in the winter there. BUT their fun, funky and sometimes crazy music make listeners forget the damn things in life.
This time, I got the chance to ask them how they enjoy their life and their secret of music essence.

We all went to the same school but at different and overlapping times, but we finally met as a quartet when we all moved to Trondheim a couple of years ago to study. Our personalities are quite different, but we all have a quite stupid sense of humour in common. Ragnhild (vocals) is good at stopping all the fooling around before it gets too far. Jonas (bass) enjoys taunting the rest of us in a low-key way. Ola (drums) always has a tongue-in-cheek remark ready. Martin (guitar) either sleeps or has hyperactive sugarcravings-
2. It seems many people mention the influence from jazz music when talking about your music genre, but I reminded some afro-pop containing bands like Animal Collective, Vampire Weekend and Dirty Projectors. And those bands are all from the U.S. I thought you are from the U.S at first. How do you feel about the position of yourself in Norwegian music scene?
I feel people really welcome our music in the Norwegian music scene, even if there aren’t too many bands right now that do similar things. It might be true that we have more in common with lots of American and British bands.
3. Your music sounds really fun containing various kind of music. How do you create your music? Do you argue when deciding the melody?
We write all our songs together in a quite organic process with equal parts deduction and random ideas. It usually starts out with one idea that one of us comes up with, and we construct the song from there. Ragnhild usually makes up a melody as we go, and maybe we come with some ideas for it, but there is generally not that much discussion about the melodies. The most important thing is that they’re not boring.
4. How were the music festivals you’ve played this year?
They were great! It felt really amazing to play as many big festivals as we did, both in Norway and elsewhere, and a bit scary. But it turned out great!
5. What do you think of the music scene in Norway?
The music scene in Norway is great! We have lots of different bands and artists and people experimenting with all kinds of stuff, and it’s just big and small enough that it’s easy to get in contact with the people that you think are interesting.
6. It seems your career as a band started as a kind of coincidence. But do you have different attitude as a band after you played at big music festival in the other country and receive many reviews regarding your music?
It took some time for us to realise that we were a real band that could have ambitions, but when we saw that we could get places with our music it was an easy decision to start working hard to achieve cooler stuff. Our attitude towards making music is still the same, though, we don’t aim to make international radio-bangers, but want to make fun and interesting music.
7. Dream band or singer to collaborate with?
We have to say Oumou Sangaré, an amazing singer from Mali.

10. Do you have any plan for your debut album? Are you going to try something new there?
Some plans are in the making right now! We’re hoping to get an album out before next summer, fingers crossed. I don’t think it’s gonna revolutionise the album format, but it’s gonna be an intense and varied piece of music with all kinds of stuff happening all the time.
11. You seem to cherish to be happy or follow your heart when playing music. What do you enjoy doing apart from playing music?
We love: cooking, sewing, climbing, making mediocre electronic music, painfully hip coffee bars, hanging out with good-humoured people, hanging out with cats, eating candy, indian food, japanese anime movies
12. Talking about the MV of ”You'll be fine”, this video looks fun but bit funny. It's all about eating banana and vomitting it...How did you come with the idea of this video? The colour contrast of red apple and yellow banana is also interesting because that contrast fits to your colourful music.
The idea for the video came from Ragnhild’s brother Olav who also made the video. I think we had some idea about the green screen-thing, but the banana focus was all Olav’s idea.
13. Having fun is the keyword of your music, and especially Ragnhild looks enjoying while the show in colourful clothes like red. I assume it's important to have fun in nordic countries because of its weather. How do you cheer yourself up when feeling depressed?
Eat candy! Or buy weird secondhand clothes. Or complain about life to each other and then feel better.
14. Can I have special message to your fans in Japan?
We really want to visit you! We have a big dream of coming to Japan soon. Please write us if you like our music!
