Interview with Alex Gough

意識的か無意識かはさておいて、

このブログでは主にロンドンのバンドばっかり最近は特に書いていたが、

最近私が激推ししたいのはアイルランドの音楽シーン。

The Murder CapitalやFontaines D.C.に始まり、JustMustardなども含めて突き刺さるバンドが多く、何か他に良いアイルランドのアーティストいないかな～と思っていた時に行き着いたのが、この彼、Alex Gough。

まだ20歳だが、自身はドラマーとしてキャリアをスタートしたラッパーで、楽曲制作からミキシングまで全て一人で自身のカレッジの寮のベッドルームでラップトップにてこなしてしまう完結度は思わず感嘆してしまうレベル。

その楽曲も、Jazzyなものからエレクトロニカ、hip hopと幅広く、音数も少ないシンプルな楽曲だからこそその良さが引き立っている。

Apple Musicで聞ける楽曲は主に去年からリリースされているものだけで、

まだ数曲レベルだが、十分に注目に値するアーティストなのでぜひチェックしてほしい。

以下、Alexとのインタビューとの全文:

1. ミュージシャンとしてのキャリアについて教えてください。何がきっかけだったのでしょうか？ 

(Alex) 音楽はかなり小さいときから好きだったよ、父親もまさにそうだったから、常にラジオで音楽がかかってたし、家にはCDがたくさん置いてあって、どこかしらでそれに気づく運命だったんだよね。歳の時にGreen DayとThe Darknessのレコードをひたすら浴びた後で誕生日にドラムキットを買ってくれって頼んで、それからすべてが始まったんだ。それからは完全に自分のできる限り音楽にどっぷりつかってた。友達と一緒に演奏したり、バンドを始めたり、リハーサルしたり、いろんなアーティストから影響を受けたりしてね。他の楽器もまあ演奏できるんだけど、心はドラマーだと思ってる、それがミュージシャンとしての最初の経験だったから。 

2. Facebookを見ると、プロフィールにドラマー、プロデューサーとあるのですが、自身の音楽はメインのプロジェクトなのですか？ 

(Alex) 「Alex Gough」としての音楽はもちろん僕のメインの活動だよ。自分自身としての音楽を始めることで、自分の音楽を聴いた人には僕のことが「ラッパー」だとかそれ以外でとらえて欲しくなかったんだ。僕は自分で自分の音楽は(自分の曲で誰かとヒューチャリングしたりするとき以外はほぼ)すべて作曲してプロデュースもしてるし、ライブのときはドラムも叩いてるよ。

3. あなたの音楽スタイルはかなり私にとって新鮮でした。自分で自身の音楽はどう表現しますか？ 

(Alex) 自分の音楽は本当に僕が聞いている音楽がすべてミックスされたみたいな音楽だになっていると思う。自分でも本当にいろんなジャンルのアーティストとかいろんな人の見方が好きだからさ。多分思うにオープンマインドで音楽を作ってるから、特定のジャンルに寄らない内容になってるんだと思う。ただ有名な音とかアイディアから自分が聞きたいものを作ってるんだ。自分の音楽に境界線を引いたりすることは絶対しないね。

4. 影響を受けたバンドやシンガーはいますか？ 

(Alex) 僕の場合かなり全部挙げようと思ったらかなりあるからなあ。かなり影響を受けた中でいくつかあげるとKendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, D’angelo, J Dilla, yussef kamaal, The Rootsかな。

5. シングル曲の「Breakfast」と「Step to me」について、テーマと曲ができた背景を教えてください。 

(Alex)　「Breakfast」はかなり内省的な曲なんだ。でもどちらかというと、僕が振り返ったことについてというよりは、曲そのものが振り返ることについて歌ってるんだ。この曲を書いたとき、その時の自分の人生を考えていて、その自分の振り返りのプロセスについて書いたんだよ。それがフックになって、「自分がやりたいことをやるんだ、誰にも聞いちゃいけない」みたいな感じで、もっと比喩的だけど、そういう結果に落ち着いたんだ。

「Step to me」もかなり似たような感じだね。多分いろんな人のことを見て、彼らがどれだけ批判的かっていうことだと思う。僕はそうやって自分に対しても他の人に対しても、ひとはみんな何か言いたいことがあって、なぜそれに耳を傾けるのか伝えてるんだ。どちらもカレッジ寮のベッドルームで自分のラップトップでレコーディングしてプロデュースもした曲。まあだからDIYなんだけど、それでもちゃんとしたものを作りあげた。

6. Ghostking is deadとも去年コラボしていますが、長年の知り合いなのですか？どうやってコラボしたのか教えてください。 

(Alex) Ghostking is Deadは僕の親友の一人なんだ。2年前にカレッジに行き始めた時に彼に会って、短期間ですごく仲良くなったんだ。「Amnesia」はそこからすぐできた曲で、そのとき僕はインスト曲に取り掛かってて、お互いの曲をみせあったりしてたから、彼にその曲についてやってみないかって聞いて出来たんだ。今でも曲作りするときはよく彼に助けてもらってるし、意見を言い合ったり、マスタリングしたり、「Step to Me」ではギターソロも演奏してくれてるよ！

7. ウォーターフォードの音楽シーンについて教えてもらえますか？ほとんどダブリン出身のThe Murder CapitalやJust Mustard、Fountaines D.Cなどのバンドは知っているのですが、ウォーターフォードについてはあまり詳しくないもので… 

(Alex) ウォーターフォードの音楽シーンは過去数年間はすごくアップダウンがあったんだ。僕が音楽シーンに入ったときは、友達とバンドを初めてそのときはラッキーなことにシーンは上がり調子だったし、オルタなとかオールドスクールなファンクバンドがいっぱいいたよ。今はそこから数年たって、ヒップホップに傾倒し始めたかな。それでもBackroad Smokers ClubとかCrome Yellowみたいな素晴らしいバンドはいるし、それからPat LagoonとかAwkward Zみたいな新しいヒップホップシーンの人もいるね。

例外的に、自分もその一員に入ってるグループはいろんなクラブとかアンダーグラウンドで開催されてるイベントとかでどちらかというとカルチャーそのものを作り上げようとしてるっていうのはあるよ。どの街もコミュニティが必要だと僕は思ってる。

8. 仲の良いバンドやアーティストについて教えてください。

(Alex) 僕は数年間アイルランド周辺で音楽をやってて、すごいかっこいいアーティストやバンドにも会ったよ。Ghostking is Deadとはすごく仲が良いし、コークにあるHausu recordsの人たちはみんな仲が良いね、それに僕の友達も結構いろんな形で音楽に関わってるかな。

9.今年の計画を教えてください。 

(Alex) 今年の終わりにEPをリリースする予定だよ。あとはクールなライブ発表がいくつかある予定…

10. アルバムについては近くリリースする予定はありますか？ 

(Alex)今年はそのつもりはないよ、でも新しい音楽はたくさん出す予定。

11. 将来的にコラボしたいアーティストはいますか？ 

(Alex) 自分の憧れのアーティストとはもちろんコラボしたいよ、Smino, Anderson Paak, Erykah Badu, brockhamptonとかは最高だね。あとはEasy life, Kojaque, Billie Eilishとか。リストにしたら長いけど、まあこんな感じ。

Putting aside if I have been doing consciously or unconsciously, my recent blog was mostly about London-based bands. 

But I wanted to know young, good, new Irish band when I got into the Murder Capital, JustMustard and Fountaines D.C. When I

found them, I

assumed the music scene in Ireland must be fantastic.

That's after a while when I found him, Alex Gough. 

His music is a mixture of hip hop, jazz, electronica, etc. 

He's still 20yrs old, but he makes music and plays drum and even produce/mix own music. He says they were completed in his college bed-room but please have a listen to blow your mind up if you are checking this article. 

I feel like I couldn't say enough to express how big he will become and already a one of the promissing artists. Anyway, please read the following article about the interview with him to know him more! 

1. Could you tell me about your career as musician? How did it start?

I was into music from a very young age, my dad was the same so there was always music on the radio and we had loads of CDs in my house, so I was bound to discover them at some point. When I was 6 years old, after spending hours wearing out Green Day and The Darkness records, I asked for a drum kit for my birthday and that’s where it all began really. Since then I’ve just completely immersed myself in everything to do with music that I possibly could. I’ve grown up playing with friends, starting bands, Rehearsing, and taking influence from other artists. I play a few other instruments but I’m a drummer at heart, that’s where I cut my teeth as a musician.

2. Your Facebook profile page describes you as drummer, producer, instead of musician. Is your music not your main project?

My music as ‘Alex Gough’ is definitely the main focus. Starting out as an artist in my own right, I preferred to let people know what I am rather than them just assume that I’m a ‘rapper’ and nothing else when they heard my music. I try to stay clear of that word cause I’m much more than just a rapper. I produce and write all my music (at least most of it aside from when I have people feature on my tracks) as well as playing drums for the live show.  

3. Your music style sounded so new to me. How do you describe your music style? 

It really is a massive mix of everything I listen to. I love so many various genres and artists and different aspects of all of them. I think I make music with an open mind which is why it’s never genre specific. I just create what I want to hear from a particular sound or idea. I never put boundaries around my music. 

4. Which bands or singers affected your music?

There’s way too many to name them all. Hugely inspired by Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, D’angelo, J Dilla, yussef kamaal, The Roots to name a few. 

5. Could you tell me about this year's singles "Breakfast" and "Step to me"?

What do you sing about in there and how were they made?

‘Breakfast’ is quite a reflective track. But more about the actual act of reflecting then the things I’m reflecting on. When I wrote it, I was thinking about my life at that specific point and wrote about my thought process. It comes to a conclusion in the hook, a “do what you want, answer to nobody” kind of thing but in a more metaphorical way. 

‘Step to me’ was very similar in that way. It’s a look at people and how critical they are I suppose. It was my way of saying to myself and to others that people are always going to have something to say, why listen to what that might be. 

They were both produced and recorded in the bedroom of my college apartment on my laptop. DIY but I made it work.

6. You collaborated with "Ghostking is dead" last year. Do you know him for a long time? How did the collaboration happen?

Ghostking is Dead is one of my closest friends. I met him when I started college 2 years ago and we’ve become really close in that short space of time. ‘Amnesia’ came about quite early on, I had an instrumental I was working on and we had been showing each other music a lot so I asked him if he’d be up for working on it and the rest is history. He helps me with a lot of the music I make today, from giving opinions, some mastering and he played the guitar solo at the end of ‘Step to Me’! 

7. Could you tell me about the music scene in Waterford? I know of the Murder Capital, JustMustard and Fontaines D.C. mostly from Dublin but I have no idea about Waterford…

The music scene in Waterford has had its ups and downs the past few years. When I first got into it, I was starting out in a band with my friends and luckily enough the scene was on the rise and full of alternative/old school funk bands. Now, a few years on, there seems to be more a lean towards hip hop. There’s still some great bands like Backroad Smokers Club and Crome Yellow, aswell as the new hip hop scene with people like Pat Lagoon and Awkward Z. 

Anomaly, the collective I’m part of, are working to build more of a culture with different club nights and underground curated events. Every city needs a community I think. 

8. Could you tell me the bands or artists you are in close relationship?

I’ve been playing music around Ireland for a good few years now, I’ve met some really cool artists and bands. I’m very close with Ghostking is Dead and good friends with a lot of the Hausu records guys from being in Cork. Luckily, a lot of my friends are involved in music in some way or another.

9. Please tell me this year's plan.

I plan to release an EP a bit later on in the year. There’s also some pretty cool live announcements to come...

10. Do you have plan to release album soon?

No album plan for this year, but LOT’s of new music. 

11. Who do you want to collaborate with in the future?

Id love to collab with some of my idols of course. Smino, Anderson Paak, Erykah Badu, brockhampton would be cool. Easy life, Kojaque, Billie Eilish. There’s a long list but that’s a few.
